The melody was recorded in 1940-41 from the playing of Salyersville, Magoffin County, east Ky., fiddler biography:John Salyer (1882-1952), by his sons who had purchased a disc recording machine. Salyer's "Big Eared Mule" has a distanced relationship to "Big Eared Mule (1)"/"Flop Eared Mule (1)," with parts reversed from the usual order. Both versions have a quadrille-style key change between the first and second strains.
