The reel was entered by County Leitrim musician Stephen Grier in his c. 1883 music manuscript collection under the title "Fanny Gibney." It was learned by County Fermanagh musician John McMahon from his Uncle Hugh, and, since he had not title for it, flute player Cathal McConnell named it after McMahon, dubbing it "Big John's Reel."
