Tune is listed as a 'jig' in Ryan's Mammoth Collection, meaning an old-time banjo tune probably associated with the sand jig dance, a type of solo dance performed on a floor that had been sanded to reduce friction and facilitate the brushing of the shoes. It was earlier published in George H. Coes' Coes Album of Jigs and Reels (1876) as "Mechanic's Hall Jig." See also parts 5 and 6 of "Kitty O'Neill's Champion," which incorporates the melody.
