The first strain of "Black's Hornpipe [1]" is cognate with the first strain of Manchester, England, musician John Roose's "Gouge Hornpipe." Editors Matt Seattle and James Merryweather note that bars 1-4 of the 'B' part are reminiscent of "Wonder Hornpipe (The)," also known as "Miss Ferry's Hornpipe."
