BRANDEWINE, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. "The Bradewine" probably refers to the Battle of Brandywine, Pennsylvania, 1777, in which the Continental forces under Washington undertook to block the British from taking the capital at Philadelphia. Due to some early errors the Americans were soon on the defensive, while the British attempted to capitalize on their early advantage. Washington failed to prevent the British from occupying the city, and was fortunate to escape with his army intact. More troops fought at Brandywine than at any other battle of the American Revolution, and it was also the second longest single-day battle of the war, after the Battle of Monmouth, with continuous fighting for 11 hours.
