CALLAHAN [2]. American, Reel (cut time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune was transcribed by A. Porter Hamblon and John Marshall Gillaspy from the playing of A. Porter's father, Williamson Hamblon (1846-1920). Three generations of fiddlers are represented in the Hamblon MS, including grandfather David Hamblon (1809-1893), originally from Cumberland Gap, Lee County, western Virginia. The tune is different than Stepp's "Callahan (1)." Unfortunately, there are errors of transcription throughout the Hamblon manuscript, making it difficult to tell whether the tune actually sounded as was transcribed, or whether (and where) the transcription is faulty.
