The tune is listed as a "jig" in Cole, which refers not the Irish 6/8 jig but rather to a type of syncopated solo dance tune often performed on stage in the mid-19th century. A sand jig refers to the practice of sanding the floor to reduce friction and to facilitate the brushing movements of the shoes.
