CAPTAIN COLLIN CAMPBELL OF SHAWFIELD'S REEL. Scottish, Reel (cut time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Captain Collin Campbell of Shawfield's Reel" was first published in Islay fiddler-composer Alexander Mackay's Collection of Reels, Strathspeys and Slow Tunes (c. 1822). Collin Campbell was born in Ardpatrick, Kilcalmonell, Argyllshire, Scotlandin July, 1785 to Walter Frederick Campbell of Shawfield & Islay and his wife Eleanor Kerr (to whom Mackay dedicated his collection). Walter Campbell was the laird of Islay, and a powerful landowner on the island. Collin, a Captain at the time of Mackay's publication, rose to become a Rear Admiral in the British navy. He died in 1851 at Park Cottage near Uxbridge, Middlesex, England. See also A. Cameron's "Captain Colin Campbell's March," probably for the same person.
