"Captain Douglas's Strathspey" was composed by Islay fiddler-composer biography:Alexander Mackay (b. 1773) and was included in his Collection of Reels, Strathspeys and Slow Tunes, printed in Glasgow around 1822. Mackay may have named his composition for Captain Douglas of Bowmore, Islay, "late of the Royal Canadian Rifles, and formerly of her Majesty's 16th Regiment"[1]. His son also joined the Canadian Rifles as an Ensign, transferred as a Lieutenant to the 42nd Regiment, and survived the Crimean War. He was mortally wounded at the age of 32 whilst leading his men against the fort of Roohea in Oude during the Indian Mutiny of 1757-1758.
