CAPTAIN HIGGINS. Irish, Air or Planxty (cut time - A & B parts, 6/8 time C & D parts). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Thompson): ABCD (O'Sullivan). Composed by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). Hardiman states that Captain Higgins was from County Mayo, and "a brave old soldier, well known in his day." O'Sullivan finds a William Higgins who rose to the rank of Captain in the Royal Irish Dragoons (d. 1759), who may be the person honored by the air.
