CAPTAIN RONALD FERGUSON'S QUICK STEP. AKA - "Capt. Ronald Ferguson's Quick Step." Scottish, March (6/8 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Capt. Ronald Ferguson's Quick Step" was composed by biography:James Walker (1771-1840), a musician, fiddler-composer, and music teacher of Dysart, Fife, Scotland. The tune was probably composed for General Sir wikipedia:Ronald Craufurd Ferguson, son of Jane Crauford, daughter of Ronald Craufurd of Restalrig, (sister to Margaret, countess of Dumfries) and William Ferguson of Raith, Fife. Robert Ferguson was his brother. Ronald Ferguson entered the British Army as an ensign in the 53rd Regiment of Foot in April, 1790, and was promoted lieutenant at the beginning of 1791. He then paid a long visit to Berlin in order to study the Prussian system of discipline, and on his return he was promoted captain in February 1793. He served with distinction in the French Revolutionary Wars and in May, 1794, was promoted to Major. This helps date Walker's collection to 1793-94. The quick step was one of a few tunes by Walker composed for the Ferguson family of Raith.
