CASTLE GARDEN (HORNPIPE). AKA and see "Williams's Hornpipe." American, Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Castle Garden began as one of the forts built to defend New York harbor at the time of the War of 1812. In 1817 the name was changed to honor DeWitt Clinton, Mayor of New York, but in just a few years the fort (Fort Clinton), situated at the tip of Manhattan Island ("The Battery"), ceased to have any defensive purpose and it was leased to the city in 1823. A restaurant and entertainment center opened at the site, renamed again as Castle Garden, and later an opera house and theatre were added. It was there that P.T. Barnum, the great showman, arranged the American debut performance of 'The Swedish Nightingale', Jenny Lind in May, 1850. As an entertainment center it had passed its hey-day by that time, however, and was supplanted by the numerous uptown attractions in a rapidly expanding New York city. In 1855 Castle Garden became an immigrant landing depot, serving as the main entryway to the United States for European immigration for the next 34 years. In all, over 8 million people entered the country through Castle Garden.
The hornpipe was not originally called "Castle Island Hornpipe," however. Boston music publisher Elias Howe had earlier published the tune in his Second Part of the Musician's Companion in 1843 under the title "Williams's Hornpipe."
