CHARLES MARCH. English, March (6/8 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDDEE. The melody appears in the mid-19th century music manuscript of Ellis Knowles (Lancashire), but had been published some eighty years earlier as "Charles March" in Thompson and Son's Complete Tutor for the English Flute (London, 1768, p. 20), albeit in the key of 'C'. Another early version of the tune can be found in the music manuscript collection of Welsh fiddler John Thomas, dated 1752, as an untitled piece (p. 18) in 6/4 time.
