CHATHAM (REEL), THE. AKA - "Chatham Hornpipe (2)." Canadian, Reel (cut time). Canada, New Brunswick. G Major (Martin): F Major (Corfield). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Martin): AABB (Corfield). According to Peter Corfield, "The Chatham Hornpipe (2)" is a 19th century tune from traditional repertory, named for the town of Chatham, New Brunswick. Chatham has since been absorbed into the municipality of greater Mirimichi. The tune, as "Chatham Reel" was in the repertory of Acadian fiddler Fidel Martin (1891-1976), of Berlin, New Hampshire, originally from Rogersville, New Brunswick. Martin was recorded in the field by Art Rosenbaum in the mid-1960's, but never made any commercial recordings. He had a varied repertory that included Acadian, Down East, Irish, and American tunes.
