CHEAT RIVER, THE. American, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The Cheat River can be found running from West Virginia, flowing into the Monongahela in Point Marion, Pa., close to the W.Va./Pa. border. Bayard (1981) notes that this tune in a composite from international strains: the 'A' part being the same as the 'A' of "O'Dwyer's {Reel}," and the 'B' part corresponding to the 'A' parts of the German "Erster Schottisch" (Boehme, No. 251, p. 159) and the English "Nancy's Fancy" (Karpeles, p. 40). See also "Three Forks of Cheat" for a similar title.
