"Comical Reel" was entered into the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection (Book 2, No. 76, p. 18) of County Leitrim fiddler and piper biography:Stephen Grier. An almost identical version is also contain in the c. 1909 music manuscript collection of biography:Rev. Luke Donnellan (Oriel Region, south Ulster) as "Rakes of Invercairn." Researchers Fr. John Quinn and Conor Ward find the tune cognate with the tune family that includes "Honorable Mrs. Maule's Reel, Sheep Shanks, Linen Cap, Kilkenny Hunt, and Struy Lodge."
