Connaught was one of the five old provinces of Ireland (along with Ulster, Leinster, Meath, and Munster), named for the ancient tribe who lived there, the Connachta.
Despite the attribution to James O'Neill in Music of Ireland, the tune was copied from Irish violinist R.M. Levey's first collection (1858), note for note. County Leitrim fiddler and piper Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894) entered the tune as an untitled jig in Book 3 of his large c. 1883 music manuscript collection.
