Sarah Harley, Countess of Kinnoull. Stipple engraving by Caroline Watson, 1798; after Samuel Shelley
COUNTESS OF KINNOUL'S DELIGHT, THE. Scottish, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. "The Countess of Kinnoul's Delight" was composed by Perthshire fiddler-composer biography:John Bowie and was printed with figures for a country dance in his Collection of Strathspey Reels and Country Dances &c. (Edinburgh, c. 1789, p. 1).

At the time of publication of Bowie's publication, the Countess of Kinnoull (note spelling) was Sarah Harley (1760-1837), the fourth daughter of Sir Thomas Harley, Lord Mayor of London, who married Robert Hay-Drummond, later 10th Earl of Kinnoul in 1781. She was his second wife (his first wife having died before their first wedding anniversary), and together they had four children. Tragically, their third child (and second son) Francis drowned in the River Earn in 1810 when he was thrown from his horse while crossing a ford, swollen by the rain of the preceding evening. Sarah's portrait was painted by Thomas Gainsborough.
