COWAL GATHERING, THE. Scottish, Pipe March (2/4 or cut time). A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD'. The melody was composed by John "Jock" McLellan (1875–1949), D.C.M., a poet and painter from Dunoon who was formerly Pipe-Major of the 8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Higlanders during World War I. He also composed "Taking of Beaumont Hamel," "Lochanside," and "Burning Sands of Egypt." The Cowal Gathering is the largest Highland games event in the world, held every summer in the Scottish town of Dunoon, Argyll, since 1894.
