The melody is a dance adaptation of songwriter Stephen Foster's minstrel song "Old Uncle Ned," written in 1848 for William Roark of the Sable Harmonists. It was included in the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of musician and ship-builder biography:Isaac Homan, of Bellport, Long Island, who employed it as the 2nd figure of a cotillion set ("The Crow Sett") comprised of adapted minstrel song tunes.
