CUCKOO'S NEST [6], THE. American, Reel (cut time). A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "Cuckoo's Nest [6]", a reel-time setting of the British hornpipe, somewhat altered, was collected from Irvin Yaugher, a western Pennsylvania fiddler born around the turn of the 20th century who learned it from a great uncle. A very similar version was recorded in the field in 1973 from the playing of Wirt County, W.Va., fiddler Glen Smith (1923-2001), who was raised in Virginia and who learned to fiddle there.
East Kentucky fiddler Ed Hayley and southwestern fiddler Roscoe Parish's versions, while quite different in detail are nonetheless cognate, and both retain the high 'c' note in the second measure of one of the strains.
"The Cuckoo's Nest" has numerous variants and versions. A more complete discussion of the vicissitudes of the tune can be found at "annotation:Cuckoo's Nest (4) (The)." See also Bayard's note for "annotation:Cuckoo's Nest (5) (The)" for more.
