CYNGHAN-SAIL CYMRY. Welsh, Air (3/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. Edward Jones included this one-strain tune in his Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards (1784) along with twenty-four variation sets. He noted, "The famous Purcell admired this Welsh Ground so much that he imitated it in a Catch." The ground is sometimes (erroneously) attributed to Purcell, although it was known to generations of pianoforte players as "Purcell's Ground with Variations".
