DAIRYMAID [4], THE (Bean an Bhainne). AKA and see "Kiss the Bride in the Bed," "Kiss the Maid in Bed," "Maids of Tipperary (The)," "Milkmaid (3) (The)," "Rockaway Bound," "Shuffle the Cards," "Tom the Fisherman." Irish, Reel. D Mixolydian (Breathnach): D Major (Moylan, Sullivan). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (most versions): AAB (Beisswenger): AA'BB' (Harker/Rafferty). The tune was recorded in 1926 in New York by County Sligo fiddler James "The Professor" Morrison, as part of a three-tune medley (including "Flax in Bloom (The)" and "Millstone (The)"), a medley reprised by Paddy Cronin on Copley 9-116 (78 RPM) in 1950. Another famed expatriate Irish fiddler, Michael Coleman, recorded the tune on a radio disc under the title "Rockaway Bound," a reference to a neighborhood in Queens, New York City. County Sligo fiddler Paddy Killoran recorded it for RTE as "Kiss the Bride in Bed."
According to Paul Cranford, "The Dairymaid [4]" was introduced to Cape Breton by Johnny Wilmot.
