DAN FRIEND'S PIECE. Old-Time, Breakdown. USA, West Virginia. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB'. See also variants "Rainy Day (2) (The)" (Melvin Wine) and "Hell Against the Barn Door," and, in the Midwest, "Yankee Squirrel Hunter" and "Squirrel Hunter." Source Ernie Carpenter (1909-1997) named the tune after the fiddler from whom he learned it. Carpenter, of rural Braxton County, W.Va., was descended from four generations of fiddlers and West Virginia pioneers, whose repertoire was largely derived from family and influential neighboring fiddlers.
