DEER WALK [1]. AKA and see "Forked Deer." American, Reel (cut time). USA, eastern Ky. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Compare "Deer Walk [1]" with the "Rocky Mountain Goat" family of tunes. The title is indigenous to central Kentucky. Kirksville, Madison County, Kentucky fiddler Doc Roberts (1897-1978) recorded the tune in March, 1929 (in Richmond, Indiana, with Asa Martin on guitar). It is said that Roberts paid little attention to music outside the region (Wolfe, 1982); implying that the tune was indigenous to the region. Charles Wolfe (1997) calls it one of Roberts' masterpieces. It was played by fiddler Ernie Hodges in the 1930's and 40's and was recorded by him in 1976.
