DOC CHAPMAN'S BREAKDOWN. American, Reel (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. A member of a large, widespread Appalachian tune family (see note for "annotation:Kitty Puss"). "Doc Chapman's Breakdown" is from fiddler Owen "Snake" Chapman (1919-2002) of Canada, Pike County, eastern Kentucky), who learned the tune from his father, George "Doc" Chapman (b. circa 1850). At first, according to John Hartford, Snake thought his father was playing some kind of exercise and only later recognized that he was playing a tune.
