DOON REEL [6], THE. AKA and see "Castle Ceili's," "Cavan Reel (The)," “Galway Reel (4),” "Highlander's Kneebuckle (5) (The)," "Leather Buttons," "Rossen Reel." Irish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'B (Moylan): ABAABB (Miller): AA'BB' (Connolly & Martin). One of the "Doon Reels" in Padraig O'Keeffe's set, obtained from his uncle, Cal Callaghan of Doon^[1], County Kerry. Paddy Cronin, also from County Kerry, recorded the tune in Boston on a Copley Records 78 RPM under the title "The Doon Reel No. 2" (paired with and followed by "Quinn's" AKA "Mountain Top (2) (The)") [1]. Cronin lived in the Boston area for much of his adult life, but returned to County Kerry in the early 1990's. A version of the reel was entered into Book 2 of the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894) under the title "Rossen Reel."

Compare with the first three measures of Rev. Luke Donnellan's air "Braes of Balquidder (The)." Researcher Conor Ward points out the tune also compares with "Craig's Reel" and "Highlander's Kneebuckle (1)."
