"Dr. William Grigor of Elgin's Reel" was composed by Elgin fiddler-composer biography:Donald Grant and published in his Collection of Strathspeys, Reels, Jigs &c. (1820-21). Dr. William Grigor was born in Elgin, Scotland, c. 1798, and obtained his medical education through apprenticeship as well as by attending lectures in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh from 1814-1816. In 1817 he qualified for his medical license from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Shortly after he emigrated to Nova Scotia and set up practice first in Antigonish, then in Truro. He became a respected practitioner in Halifax and was elected the first president of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia in 1854. He died in Halifax in 1857.
