EARL EDDY'S BREAKDOWN. AKA - "Earl Eddy's Favorite." American, Hornpipe. USA, New York. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. Fiddler Earl Eddy was from Galway, Saratoga County, northeastern N.Y., and was a regionally renowned musician who competed in fiddle contests such as the Second Annual Northeast Old-Time Fiddler's Convention in Plainfield, Vermont, in October, 1964. There is a tape of this fiddle contest at the Library of Congress (AFS 19362-19363) donated by another contestant, fiddler Larry Older, also of Saratoga County. It was Older who may have given the tune its name, having learned it from Eddy. According to Adirondack fiddler Vic Kibler (who never met Eddy), Eddy was reputed to have had a vast repertory. There is little information to be gleaned about Eddy, although he may have been the 78 year old Earl E. Eddy who died on 2/24/1966 in Greenfield Center, New York, some 12 miles distant from Galway.
