ENGLAND'S LAMENTATION FOR THE LATE QUEEN MARY. English, Air (3/4 time). England, Northumberland. D Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "England's Lamentation for the Late Queen Mary" was entered into the c. 1694 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician Henry Atkinson of Hartburn. Queen Mary II was the daughter of Charles I and the spouse of King William III (William of Orange), with whom she jointly ruled until her death in 1694. Thus Atkinson's air was topical. She is remembered for spreading the fashion for china-ware displays and chintz soft furnishings.
