EXIT BY MISTAKE. English, Reel and Country Dance Tune (whole time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Exit by Mistake" is the name of a comedy ballet with music by Sir Henry Rowley Bishop (1786-1855), produced in 1816 when hewas director of the music at the King's Theatre in the Haymarket. Directions for a country dance called "Exit by Mistake" were printed in Philapdelphia, Pa., inAmerican Ladies Pocket Book, for the Year 1818. The melody was entered into the music manuscript collection of fiddler John Burks (of whom nothing is known), dated 1821.
