FORBES' MARCH, THE. Scottish, Pipe March (2/4 time). A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune is attributed to "A. Walker" in Highland bagpiper William Ross's 1869 collection, presumably referring to fiddler-composer biography:Alexander Walker who issued a collection of Scottish music in the mid-1860's. Walker, a contemporary of Ross's, was head gardener for Sir Charles Forbes at Castle Newe, Aberdeenshire, until he emigrated to the United States in 1870. The Queen visited Castle Newe in 1859, as did the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1864 and again in 1876, and it is possible that William Ross (The Queen's Piper) and Walker may have met at that time. Walker memorialized her visit in his composition "Royal Visit to Newe 1859 (The)."
