Sheet Music for "General Shirley's March"General Shirley's MarchGeneral Sherley's MarchMarchBook: Elias Howe – Musician’s Omnibus Nos. 6 & 7 (Boston, 1880-1882, p. 603) Transcription: AK/Fiddler’s Companion

GENERAL SHERLEY'S MARCH. AKA and see "General Shirley's March." Engish, March (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABCC. The melody was printed as "General Sherley's March" in London music publishers Charles and Ann Thompson in their Compleat Tutor for the Hautboy (1758, p. 15), and, a decade later, in Charles and Samuel Thompson's Thirty Favourite Marches Book 1 (1769, p. 15). American publishers spelled the title "General Shirley's March." It may be that the American spelling was correct, or, that New England publishers associated the title with General Wikipedia:William_Shirley (1694--1771) who "was a British colonial administrator whowas the longest-serving governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay (1741–1749 and 1753–1756) and then Governor of the Bahamas (1760–1768). He is best known for his role in organizing the 1745 Siege of Louisbourg during King George's War and for his role in military affairs during th French and Indian War. He spent most of his years in the colonial administration of North America working to defeat New France, but his lack of formal military training led to political difficulties and his eventual downfall" [1].
