GIGUE DU CARNAVAL. French-Canadian, Reel (cut and 3/2 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. Montreal fiddler Isidore Soucy's 'crooked' (irregularly metered) "Gigue du carnaval" is of unknown origin, although Soucy researcher Jean Duval noted distinct similarity to "Hick's Hornpipe", as printed by Francis O'Neill in 1903. 'Carnaval' in the title refers to the celebration known as Carnival and Mardi Gras, which Duval notes was on March 3rd, 1928, for which the release of the recording was timed.
