Grape Juice (pasteurized to stop fermentation) was invented in 1869 by Thomas Bramwell Welch as part of the temperance movement as an alternative to wine for church services. It didn't catch on until Thomas's son, Charles E. Welch (like his father, a dentist), decided to promote the product full time, establishing the Welch's Juice Company in 1893. As the temperance movement grew, so the product's popularity.
