GREEN GROW THE RUSHES O [3]. French-Canadian, Reel or Polka (cut and 3/2 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Green Grow the Rushes O" comes from the playing of Gaspésian fiddler Alden Keith Patterson (1916-1989), who taught it to fiddler Claude Méthé in the early 1970's who then popularized it through his recording with the band Entreloupe and through live performances. Although Patterson was then living in Sainte-Foy, Québec, just outside Quebec City, he originally hailed from Sandy Beach at the eastern end of the Gaspé (not far from Douglastown). The tune is an adaptation of the Scottish air and dance tune "Green Grow the Rushes O (1)," although the origins of Patterson's adaptation are unknown.
