GREENSLEEVES [6]. AKA - "Green Sleaves". English, Reel (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Green Sleaves" (Greensleeves [6]) was transcribed by early 20th century folklorist Anne Gilchrist from the 1838 music manuscript of Lake District musician William Irwin. Ms. Gilchirst identified his "Green Sleaves" (No. in the Irwin collection) as a variant of "Green Grow the Rushes O", but modern researchers such as Chris Partington and John Offord note that the resemblance is not a strong one to many versions of the latter tune. However, it is quite similar (particularly in the second strain) to Irwin's own version of "Green Grow the Rushes O" (No. 98 in his ms. collection).
