HERRING BUSS, THE. English, Country Dance Tune and Jig (6/8 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The country dance tune was printed in London publisher John Hinton's long-running periodical The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (November, 1750, p. 231). A herring buss [1] (or, in Dutch, Haringbuis) was a type of seagoing fishing vessel, mostly used by Dutch and Flemish herring fishermen in the 15th through early 19th centuries.
