HIE O SAYS ROWLY. AKA and see "March (30)." English, Air (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Hie O Says Rowly" was entered in the 1823 music manuscript collection of musician Robert Hughes (Whitchurch, Shropshire). The title is the refrain of the song known as "A frog he would a-wooing go" or one of its several variant titles.
A frog he would a-wooing go,
Heigh ho! says Rowley,
A frog he would a-wooing go,
Whether his mother would let him or no.
With a rowley, powley, gammon, and spinach,
Heigh ho! says Anthony Rowley.
A version of the tune can be found as "March (30)" in the American military music collection The Woburn Fife Manuscript dating to the early 19th century.
