The jig is almost always called "Atholl Highlanders" in modern times, but appears as "Highland Fabrick" in Henry Colclough's c. 1830 tutor for the uilleann pipes. However, the melody predates Colclough, and can be found on a single-sheet publication from a decade earlier and as one of the entries in Onondoga, New York, flute player Daniel Henry Huntington's copybook, dating from 1817 (Huntington has an idiosyncratic notation). The title presumably refers to wool plaid. The melody was also entered into the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of County Cork Church of England cleric and uilleann piper James Goodman (vol. 4, p. 18).
