See also "Galway Reel (A)/Highlander's Kneebuckle (5) (The)" printed in the Darley & McCall's Feis Ceoil Collection of Irish Airs (1912). Breathnach (1976) finds the tune in Byrne's Collection of New Country Dances for 1800 and in Lee's Country Dances for this present year 1801. Paul de Grae's source, the late fiddler Paddy O'Sullivan of north Kerry, fiddler friend Paddy O'Sullivan said of the tune that it is "probably West Country - not Scotch but the West Country of England. They got better music from the West Country to Ireland than they did from Scotland." Breathnach's and Kennedy's versions are nearly identical. "Highlander's Kneebuckle (2) (The)" is a 12/8 slide setting of the same melody.
Researcher Conor Ward points out the tune compares with "Craig's Reel" and "Doon Reel (6) (The)."
