I WISH MY LOVE WERE IN A MIRE. AKA - "I wish my Love were in a mire." Scottish, Air (4/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "I wish my love were in a mire" was printed in Alexander Stuart's Musick for Allan Ramsay’s Collection part 2 (c. 1724), and the melody was the indicated tune for Scottish poet Allan Ramsay's song "To Chloe" in his Tea Table Miscellany (1724). It can also be found in Scottish musician and dancing master David Young's MacFarlane Manuscript (c. 1741, No. 53, pp. 108-110), "Written for the use of Walter Mcfarlan of that ilk." The tune later appears, labeled a 'new set', in the (James) Gillespie Manuscript of Perth (1768), and it was entered into the music manuscript collections of James Ballantine (1770, Peeblesshire) and John Rook (1840, Waverton, Cumbria).
