IRISH DUMP [1], AN. Irish, Air (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. A 'dump' is an archaic term for a melancholy strain in music, and is also thought to have been a kind of dance.â Antiquarian William Chappell, writing in the mid-19th century remarked: "A dump was a slow dance. "Queen Mary's Dump" is one of the tunes in William Ballet's Lute Book, and "My Lady Carey's Dompe" is printed in Stafford Smith's Musica Antiqua (ii. 470), from a manuscript in the British Museum, temp. Henry VIII.â
