JACKSON'S OVER THE WATER [1]. AKA - "Jackson Over the Water." AKA and see "Jackson's Lake." Irish, Jig (6/8 time). F Major: G Major (Aird, Goodman, Mulhollan). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A composition of the famous 18th century gentleman musician Walker 'Piper' Jackson, of the townland of Lisduan, in the parish of Ballingarry, Limerick. The tune was first published by Samuel Lee in Dublin c. 1774 in Jackson's Celebrated Irish Tunes, a volume reprinted in 1790. Goodman gives the title as "Jackson's Lake." Glasgow musician James Aird printed the jig in 1803 in his sixth and last volume of Selections of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, as "Jackson's Over the Water, 1780", by which title it appears in the music manuscript collection of fiddler John Fife (who was probably from Perthshire, but who may also have compiled his ms. at sea, as there is mention of sea battles in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas). The jig was entered into vol. 2 of the large mid-19th century music manuscript collection of County Cork cleric and uilleann piper wikipedia:James_Goodman_(musicologist).
