JAMIE'S RETURN. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. "Jamie's Return" is the name of a dance the was staged after Act I of the play Summer Amusement, staged at the Haymarket Theatre in June, 1787. It was danced by "the young D'Egvilles, Miss DeCamp". "Jamie's Return" was entered in the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter (1774-1861), a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset, southwest England.
The melody was also entered into Book 1 of the 1788 music manuscript collection of Thomas Molyneaux, who identified himself as an Ensign in the 6th Regiment (of Foot), Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Shelburne was a primary destination for American Loyalists after the peace of 1783.
