JOE O'CONNELL'S DREAM. AKA and see "Black-Eyed Sailor," "Broom (The)," "Lord Wellington (2)," "Sheehan's Reel," "Wellington's Reel (1)." Irish, Reel. A popular tune in the 78 RPM era, frequently recorded under a variety of titles. Fiddler Hugh Gillespie (1906-1986) recorded it in New York as "Joe O'Connell's Dream" (in a medley with "Paddy Finlay's Fancy," by which title has been mistakenly applied to "Joe O'Connell's" because the 'Paddy' title was listed first ("Paddy Finlay's Fancy" is better known as "Galway Rambler (The)"). Gillespie was a native of Ballybofey, County Donegal, and emigrated to the US in 1928. He settled in the New York area where he found worked as an engineer for the local electric company, and became a protege of County Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman.
