JOSEPHINE'S REEL. Canadian, Reel (cut time). Canada, Nova Scotia. C Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Josephine's Reel" was composed by dairy farmer, miller, sometime printer and bookbinder and fiddler James Barry (1819-1906) of Six Mile Brook, Pictou County, northern Nova Scotia. Barry named it for his eldest daughter (born around 1862), his favorite in the family and the person he doted on. Unfortunately, Barry's marriage (to Isabella "Bell" MacLennan) was not a particularly happy one, and after a decade they were largely estranged. They managed to produce children, however, including Josephine and her younger sister Elizabeth (b. 1867).
