KATY IS WAITING. Irish, Jig (6/8 time). E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Related to the "Hillside" group of tunes, according to musicologist Samuel Bayard (See Bayard's note for "Hillside"). It is a variant of "Hills of Glenorchy (1)" and "Trip to Galway." See also the related "Rattle the Quilt." The composition is credited to Jas. Hand in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883). James 'Jimmy' Hand was one of two brothers or a father and son who are referenced in Ryan's Mammoth several times, at least once with the title "the 'boss' jig player'. Nothing is known about the Hands, although probably they were (like other performers referenced in the volume) regional New England fiddlers and performers.

Compare also with the "Come in from the Rain" family of tunes.
