English, Scottish; Country Dance Tune (9/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody, under the title "Kick the Scrubs Out," appears in the London publications of John Johnson (Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 4, 1742, p. 47) and David Rutherford (Rutherford's Compleat Collection of 200 of the Most Celebrated Country Dances, 1756). It was appears in James Oswald Caledonian Pocket Companion, Book 10 (1760, p. 15), albeit under the "Kick the World Before You" title, and, as "Kick the Rogues Out," in Bremner (1757) and Stewart's (1788) collections. Cellist and composer James Oswald [1] (1710-1769) printed it in his Caledonian Pocket Companion Book 10 (London, 1760, p. 15) as "Kick the World before You." See also William Bradbury Ryan's version as "Red Stockings (2)."
