Breathnach (1963) says there is a 'faulty version' called "Tom Steele" (the name of a colleague of the Irish statesman Daniel O'Connell) that appears in the late 19th century publication Kerr's Violin Instructor and Irish Folk Song Album (83). Researchers Conor Ward and Fr. John Quinn find a cognate version of the reel in the 1883 music manuscript of County Leitrim musician biography:Stephen Grier under the title "Hank of Cabbage."
